Trade School is a mandatory component of the apprenticeship program in Ontario. All apprentices in regulated trades must attend Trade School according to the M.A.E.S.D. and apprentices must also be successful at each level before they can proceed further in their apprenticeship.
Frequently asked questions
Who schedules me for Trade School?
If attending Humber or George Brown your JAC Counsellor will be monitoring your progress throughout your apprenticeship and will contact you when you need to attend Trade School. If you are attending any other College you will receive an invitation from the Ministry in the mail. You need to contact your Counsellor to let them know you want to go to school. They will look at your situation with regards to hours and STC’s and then advise you if it’s the right time for you to go to school.
Do I get to select the school I want to attend?
Yes. As long as they offer the 309A Construction and Maintenance Program you may choose the College you wish to attend.
Do I get paid while at Trade School?
No. You are not working so you can’t get paid. You are entitled to Employment Insurance benefits because you are attending Trade School. There is a Sub Fund available through the IBEW LU 353 and once you successfully complete that Level of Trade School there is a Bursary ($300.) provided by the GTECA to help offset your costs.
Will I need to buy books?
The required textbooks are provided for you by the JAC. Some Colleges might require you to purchase an additional textbook specific to their program. Once you are registered for Trade School you can come to the JAC and pick up the required books. Once Trade School is completed you will return them to the JAC office so other apprentices can use them once they are scheduled for Trade School.
