ONTARIO YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (OYAP)

The OYAP / Electrical Apprentice Program is the pathway for high school students to become a 309A Construction & Maintenance Electrician (ICI - Industrial, Commercial & Institutional). A student considering this pathway should already have decided that this is the career they want to pursue.

Highlights of the Program:

1 ~ Initial Steps:

  • Guidance Counsellor / Co-op Teacher identifies interested student who meets the requirements and will be ready for placement in their 2nd semester of grade 12.
  • Guidance Counsellor / Co-op Teacher assists student in finding a work placement with a union-approved contractor (https://www.ecao.org/find-a-contractor).

2 ~ Introduction:

  • Guidance Counsellor / Co-op Teacher introduces the student to the Alliance Director via email.
  • The following information:
    a. Resume
    b. Transcript
    c. Safety Certificates
    d. Contractor details

3 ~ Next Steps:

  • If student is approved by the Alliance, they will attend an orientation and then start their placement with the contractor and will be paid at the pre-apprentice rate.
  • Upon completion of placement, the pre-apprentice may be offered continued employment with the contractor. In this case, the graduated student will return to the Alliance for an additional orientation and will be enrolled in the Pre-Apprentice Program. The student shall be given credit for all OYAP hours towards their 1,800 pre-apprenticeship hours.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • Required Documentation:
    High school transcript
    Current resume
    Proof of completion of Health and Safety Awareness, WHIMIS, and Working at Heights
  • Applicants must be available all day Mon-Fri and have reliable transportation.
  • Applicants must demonstrate they are applying with the intent of completing the program and obtaining a C of Q in the trade.
  • Students must complete 1 Math, 1 English and 1 Physics course from the chart below by the end of grade 12.
